http://www.ittf.com/2017/06/25/updated-ittf-statement-ma-long-fan-zhendong-xu-xin-china-open-forfeits/

It's fucking 2017. You can't delete anything from the Internet.

——————————————————

First of all, let me start by saying I am disappointed in ITTF deleting and banning comments for the "Updates to Chinese players forfeiting" page. The statement that ITTF is investigating how and why the players forfeited is a blatant lie, and what you are doing is no better than the CTTA. The players and coaches made it clear on weibo at 19:00, June 23 (which was the day Liu Guoliang first became head coach in 2003) that they miss Liu Guoliang (of course, later all those posts are deleted by the government-controlled Sina weibo -- but fans and celebrities made numerous screenshots and reposted to show solidarity). What ought to be investigated is not why they forfeited but why Liu Guoliang was sacked!

As a Canadian born in China, I have grown used to the mainland's controlled media, and how freedom of speech is limited on sites like weibo. So I wasn't expecting much when Liu Guoliang was assigned a different position without explanation. But it soon became clear that not even the players knew why they suddenly lost their coach. Liu was responsible for rebuilding the Chinese TT team and fostering a healthy, competitive atmosphere, where young players also get to challenge the world-top-ranking players, and make it up on the internal rankings based on their performance. There are plenty of examples from recent games, Sun Yingsha, for one, played well and rose from the second-tier team to the first-tier in January, and earn herself a chance to represent China in the Japan and China open recently.

Table tennis has a special place in the heart of Chinese nationals and immigrants all over the world. Not only is it the "national sport", it is often a link between the older generations and the new. And Liu Guoliang is not just any coach. It is clear even to the Chinese public who don't consider themselves sports fans, that the Chinese TT team wouldn't be where it is today without him. The reason this decision has caused such an uproar on Chinese social media, is much more than the symbolic value of this great team. Granted, this is probably one of the few teams with a public image in China where there's so much transparency in how big decisions are made. Everyone really comes together and is always ready to sacrifice for the greater good. It's model can be considered a meritocracy, where former World and Olympic Champions like Ma Lin and Wang Hao (and of course, Liu Guoliang himself) do all they can to help the young players improve - and not just their own players, but players in the Chinese team who are officially under the other coaches, as well (remember how tough the internal competition is). The common goal for everyone on the team is to make their country proud. This is why it was so insulting when the CTTA and general administration of sports statements diminished the players' bravery as un-patriotic. I honestly cannot think of any public figure more patriotic in the country. Children look up to them, and elderly people speak fondly of the older generation of players, when the pen hold grip was still the mainstream...And honestly, watching the WTTC this year was the first time in many years that I've felt proud about China. I dare say I'm not the only one.

And if Liu can be forcefully removed the night before a big game, without anyone bothering to explain (a half-hearted statement about the decision only came out AFTER the players apologized, saying it was part of an effort to "revolutionize" how the TT team is organized and managed), this literally could happen to anyone in the country. And what exactly was WRONG about the way the Chinese team is right now, that everything needs to be torn down and rebuild??? How is it still not "efficient" enough? The official statement you can see in this news write-up provides no answer.

It's heartbreaking to see efforts of generations of players and coaches to build this team and help develop table tennis for the benefit of fans and players around the world will be put to waste. I mean no disrespect for players of other nations, but currently the Chinese team is indeed the best. The extremely high-quality table tennis they play is a joy for fans around the world. It would be a shame, and a disgrace to suddenly lose all of it due to politics. It's not simply a loss for China and an easy win for whoever benefits most. It will damage the sport for years to come.

So, what we fans of the Chinese TT team (regardless of nationality) are demanding in support of the world's top 3 male players is this:

We urge the CTTA and its overarching institution, the national general administration of sports to reveal its decision-making process to the public, and give a proper explanation as to why they removed Liu Guoliang from his head coach position when he has been performing his job superbly, helping China secure the gold medals during WTTC 2017.

We hope that ITTF would follow its mission statement and uphold the integrity of this sport, for the sake of players and fans worldwide. In other words, ITTF should at least act as a moderator or help the CTTA investigate the sudden removal of Liu Guoliang, not why the players forfeited, as claimed in the updated statement. Fans in China are counting on you to help conduct a fair investigation, and reveal the truth, no limit freedom of speech and ban comments like the Chinese government.

The players and coaches have risked their all to protect the sport they love, in hopes of preventing it from getting destroyed by politics. I am certain there are millions of table tennis fans around the world who would still like to see Ma Long, Xu Xin, and Fan Zhendong play at their best for years to come. Liu Guoliang was the one who strengthened the team and offered the environment to allow them to thrive, not to mention helping them develop using his own experience. I can only hope this situation will get resolved openly and justly, so their courageous efforts won't be in vain.
